The damage rate of refractory lining of chlorination furnace is mainly controlled by the carbothermal reduction rate of AL2O3 SiO2 material. The damage process is:

(1) Inside the brick, the external CO gas diffuses to the inside of the material through the pores of the material, generates SiO and CO2 gas by carbothermal reduction reaction with SiO2, and diffuses to the outside. When reaching the surface of the brick, SiO gas reacts with C and CL2 on the surface to generate SiGL4 gas, which diffuses to the furnace. The carbon thermal reduction reaction between CO gas and SiO2 leads to loose material structure, and further forms a channel for external CO to penetrate into the brick. This is repeated until the CO pressure inside the brick is too small to react with SiO2 or the reaction temperature cannot be reached.

(2) On the surface of the brick, SiO2 directly reacts with C to generate SiO and CO, and the generated SiO reacts with C and CL2 to generate SiGL4, which directly diffuses into the furnace.

(3) external mixed with TiO2. Fine particles of SiCL4 gas through the SiO2 carbon thermal reduction reaction to form the channel, then continue to penetrate into the brick, the formation of Al2O3 SiO2 TiO2 liquid phase (TiCL4 this phase diagram of the impact of no data reported), so as to accelerate the disintegration of the structure of the material, resulting in a sharp decline in wear resistance.

(4) Whether in the brick or on the surface, mullite particles are basically maintained its original particle morphology, once again proved that its damage rate is controlled by the carbon thermal reduction rate, and has nothing to do with the rate of chlorination reaction (although from the thermodynamics of mullite is most prone to chlorination reaction).
